What is prayer? | The raising of the heart to God and communing with Him. | |
Why should we pray? | Because God commands us to pray, and because we are poor, needy creatures, who receive all temporal and spiritual gifts from the goodness of God. | |
Is prayer simply a duty? | It is not only a sacred duty but also a precious privilege of the children of God. | |
What are the different kinds of prayer? | Petition, intercession, thanksgiving, and praise. | |
To whom should we pray? | Only to God, who is both able and willing to give us all we need. | |
How should we pray? | In the name of Christ, humbly and devoutly, with childlike faith in God's mercy, and resignation to His holy will. | |
For what should we pray? | For all spiritual and temporal blessings, but not for any thing which is contrary to the will of God. | |
For whom should we pray? | For ourselves, for our parents, kindred and friends, and for all men, even our enemies. | |
Where can and should we pray? | Everywhere, but especially in the church, in the family, and in the closet. | |
How often should we pray? | At all times, but especially every morning and evening, and at every meal. | |
Does God hear our prayers? | Yes, God hears all our prayers, for He is omnipresent and omniscient. | |
Does God answer our prayers? | Yes, God answers our prayers for Christ's sake, because He is our merciful Father. | |
But when does God refuse our prayers? | When we ask amiss or for things injurious to us. |
