What are the three groups of reticular nuclei? Precerebellar, central, and lateral.
What are the nuclei in the precerebellar group? Lateral reticular nuclei, paramedian reticular nuclei, and teticulotegmental.
What is the function of the precerebellar nuclei? To project and receive input from the cerebellum, translate states/alertness /consciousness to the cerebellum.
What are the nuclei in the central group? Raphe nuclei, locus cereleus, ventral reticular nucleus, gigantocellular reticular nucleus, and pontine reticular nucleus.
What is locus cereleus associated with? Sleep and wake cycles.
What are the ventral reticular nucleus, gigantocellular reticular nucleus, and pontine reticular nucleus associated with? The descending reticulospinal pathways.
What are the nuclei in the lateral group? Parivicellular, cuneiform, subcuneiform, and pedunculopontine.
What are the parivicellular, cuneiform, subcuneiform, and pedunculopontine associated with? Visceral functions of the reticular formation.
Describe the ascending reticular activating system. Fibers of the reticular formation that project to the hypothalamus and thalamus.
Where are the fibers of the ascending reticular activating system found? Not in specific tracts, but in the pons, midbrain, and diencephalons.
Afferents to the ascending reticular activating system are from where? Spinoreticular tract, cranial nerve nuclei, tectoreticular tract, and the association cortex of the parietal lobe.
What are the two types of fibers used by the ascending reticular activating system? Type I and type II.
Describe type I fibers. Large, rapid conductor, can only excite the cerebral cortex for a few milliseconds.
Describe type II fibers. Small, slow conduction, longer term, background excitability.
What are the two pathways of the Reticulospinal tract? The medullary reticulospinal tract and the pontine reticulospinal tract.
The medullary reticulospinal tract and the pontine reticulospinal tract are part of what? The descending reticular activation system.
