What is the celestial sphere? The celestial sphere is an imaginary sphere surrounding the Earth representing the sky. Ancient astronomers pictured celestial objects attached to it.
What is the celestial equator? The celestial equator is an imaginary line on the celestial sphere lying exactly above the Earth's equator. It divides the celestial sphere into northern and southern hemisperes.
What is the ecliptic? The ecliptic is the path the Sun appears to make around the celestial sphere as the Earth moves along its orbit. The path gets its name because eclipses can occur only when the Moon crosses the ecliptic.
What is a constellation? A constellation is a grouping of stars on the night sky. Astronomers divide the sky into 88 constellations.
What is special about the zodiacal constellations? The zodiacal constellations lie along the ecliptic.
What causes the seasons? The seasons are caused by the tilt of the Earth's rotation axis.
How long does it take the Moon to go through a cycle of phases? Approximately 29.5 days.
How much later does the Moon rise each day? About 50 minutes.
What is the difference between lunar and solar eclipses? A solar eclipse occurs whenever the Moon passes directly between the Sun and the Earth and block our view of the Sun. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon and casts its shadow on the Moon.
Why aren't there eclipses each month? The Moon's orbit is tipped with respect to the Earth's orbit.
What is an eclipse season? Twice each year, the moons orbital plane (if extended) passes through the Sun. At those times, eclipses will happen when the Moon crosses the Earth's orbital plane, the ecliptic.
