Describe A state. Lower level of alertness, difficult to tell what the infant is doing.  
Describe AH state. Hyper-alert, see whites of eyes.  
Describe AL state. Low level of alertness.  
Describe B state. Quality alertness, can tell what the infant is doing.  
Define habituation. A response decrement with repeated presentation of the same stimulus, if response stays the same = poor memory/CNS integrity.  
What are good indications of state control? Can be in an alert state and maintain it for brief periods of time, can self console.  
What are the signs of state withdrawal? Half closing eyes, not being able to wake-up or calm down, whining, fussing, yawning, eye blinking, sighing.  
What are signs of good attention and interaction? Pupils dilate, brow raising, alerting, whimper like sounds, mutual gaze/locking visually or auditorily, round mouth and pursed lips, and cooing.  
What are signs of attention and interaction withdrawal? Frowning, facial grimace, pucker face, ugh face, loss of facial tone, clenched eyes, gaze aversion.
