What are the components of the limbic system? Limbic association cortex, hippocampal formation, amigdaloid complex, septal nuclei, basal ganglia, thalamus, hypothalamus, epithalmus, portions of the periaqueductal gray and the reticular formation.
What are the components of the limbic association cortex? Orbito-frontal, cingulated, entorhinal, and temporal pole (parahippocampal gyrus and uncus).
Where is the hippocampal formation? The temporal lobe.
What does hippocampal formation include? Hippocampus (Ammon’s horn), subiculum, and dentate nucleus.
What is the purpose of the hippocampus (Ammon’s horn)? It converts info to memory.
What is the purpose of the subiculum? It connects the parahippocampal gyrus to the hippocampus, receives sensory info.
What is the purpose of the dentate nucleus? Projects information out of the cortex.
What are the complex of nuclei in the amigdaloid complex? Cortical medial, basolateral, and central nucleus.
What is the purpose of the corticomedial nucleus? Olfaction.
What is the purpose of the basolateral nucleus? All other emotions.
What is the purpose of the central nucleus? To project an information out.
What are the subnuclei in the septal nuclei? Medial, lateral, and dorsal subnuclei.
What is the purpose of the medial, lateral, and dorsal subnuclei? Emotions behind eating.
What are the components of the basal ganglia? Ventral striatum, ventral pallidum, and nucleus accumbens.
What are the components of the thalamus? Anterior nuclei, dorsomedial nucleus.
What is the purpose of the hypothalamus? It provides the major output pathway of the limbic system.
What are the components of the hypothalamus? Mammillary nuclei, ventromedial nucleus, lateral hypothalamic area.
What are the components of the epithalmus? The habenula.
What is the purpose of the habenula? To store smell memories.
What are the functions of the limbic system? MMOVE: motivation, memory, olfaction, visceral responses, and emotions.
What is the role of the hippocampus and memory? To convert short term memory into long term memory.
What is the role of the amygdala? Autonomic and the orienting responses, emotion, food intake, arousal, and sexual activity.
What is the role of the septal area? Emotions, learning, autonomic responses, drinking, feeding, and sexual activity.
