What is the function of the special nuclei in the hypothalamus? To modulate opposing functions of the hypothalamus and mediate emotional responses.
What is the effect of a lesion in the epithalmus? Seizures, problems with olfaction and memories.
What is the effect of a lesion in the periaqueductal gray? Mutism, indifference to pain.
Describe the Papez circuit. Circuit for emotional responses, largest, most important.
What is the Papez circuit pathway? Hippocampus to fornix to mammillary bodies through mamillothalamic tract to anterior thalamic nucleus to thalamocortical fiber system to cingulated gyrus back to hippocampus.
What is the pathway of the amygdala circuit? Afferent information is relayed to the amygdala from the sensory systems and from the dorsal medial nucleus of the thalamus, the lateral and medial hypothalamus, septal area, periaqueductal gray and solitary nucleus.
Describe the amygdala circuit. Output is projected at two primary pathways: stria terminalis and ventral amygdalofugal pathway.
What is the pathway of the stria terminalis? A ā€œCā€ shaped pathway to the anterior commissure and then to the septal nuclei or the hypothalamus.
What is the ventral amygdalofugal pathway? Base of the brain sends fibers to cortical and subcortical areas.
