What are the key concepts in the Rood approach? Coeffect: between muscle tone and motor control; interactions between the nervous system and occupations, Intention (goal direction) coeffects movement, Repetition: of muscular patterns creates movement patterns, Real life context increase treatment effectiveness, Therapist uses somatic markers to select interaction methods with clients
What are the four components of motor control? Mobility, Stability, WS, and Skill
What are the components of Mobility? o Reciprocal inhibition (innervation) o Protective function o Phasic (quick) o Cocontraction of agonists o Reflex governed o Basis for movement needed to engage in occupation
What are the components of stability o Cocontraction o Provides stability o Tonic o Hold for long period of time o Simultaneous contraction of agonist and antagonists o Foundation of postural control o Usually test in weight bearing
What are the components of weight shifting (aka: heavy work)? o Mobility superimposed on Stability o Proximal muscles contract; Distal segment is fixed o Agriculture and industry occupations (lifting, moving, pulling)
What are the components of skill? o Highest level of motor control o Proximal segment stabilized; Distal segment moves freely o Mobility AND Stability o Oil painting; computer work
What do motor patterns help with? The integration of reflexes
Describe the motor pattern of supine withdrawal. o Total flexion response toward vertebral level T10 o Protective o Mobility posture requiring reciprocal innvervation; heavy work of proximal muscles o Aids integration of TLR o Therapeutically: used for pt.s who lack reciprocal flexion pattern and for those dominated by extensor tone
Describe the motor pattern of rollover. o Mobility pattern for the extremities o Activates lateral trunk musculature o Stimulates semicircular canals of vestibular system; activates neck and extraocular muscles o Therapeutically: used with dominant TLR in supine position
Describe the motor pattern of pivot prone (prone extension). o Need full range of extension in neck, shoulders, trunk, LE o Is a Mobility AND Stability pattern o Does preparation for extensor muscles in upright postures o Associated with labyrinthine righting reactions of the head o Shows integration of STNR and TLR
Describe the motor pattern of neck cocontraction (coinnervation). o First Stability pattern (genuine) o Cocontraction of neck precedes cocontraction of trunk and extremities o Elicits TLR when face is perpendicular to the floor o Promotes neck stability and extraocular control
Describe the ontogenetic development pattern of prone on elbows. o Stretches upper trunk to influence stability of scapula and glenohumeral regions o Good visibility o Weight shift side to side- sagittal plane o Inhibits the STNR
