What are the principles of the stages of motor learning? Practice, feedback, transfer of training, mental practice, guidance, and motivation
What are the principles of practice? Amount, massed vs. distributed, constant vs. variable, blocked vs. random, part vs. whole
Define massed practice. Practice time is greater than rest time - THIS is what therapists SHOULD be doing in therapy
Define distributed practice. Rest time between trials is equal or greater than practice time
Define constant practice. Repeated practice of the same task under the same conditions
Define variable practice. Practicing under a variety of conditions
What are the benefits of variable practice? Improves transfer of learning (task specificity), but not appropriate for individuals with cognitive impairment
During which stages is variable practice useful? In the intermediate associative stage or late autonomous stage of motor learning
Define blocked practice. All repetitions of task A are performed before moving onto task B
Define random practice. No tasks is repeated two times in a row, random order, contextual interference
Define part-task practice. Used for tasks that can be broken naturally into discrete units (serial tasks)
Define whole-task practice. Used for tasks of short duration, or long continuous tasks/cyclical repetition, institute ASAP, better than part-task practice
